Vacuum excavators are a unique type of earthmoving machinery focussing on safe, careful, and non-destructive digging. Traditional excavators can damage underground utilities, require labour-intensive backfilling and site cleans when finished, disrupt the landscape they tread on, and struggle to fit into tight spaces. A vacuum excavator avoids these issues by applying high-pressure water to the ground, breaking up and sucking up soil, and leaving everything else untouched. The high-pressure hose can be operated metres away from the actual machine where the truck may not fit and allows machine operators to excavate only what they need to.
